Judge Bridget Brennan, Northern Ohio U.S. District Court

Judge Bridget Brennan

Northern Ohio U.S. District Court

Bridget M. Brennan was born in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania in 1974. She earned an undergraduate degree from John Carroll University and received a Juris Doctor from Case Western Reserve University.

She served as an associate in a Cleveland law firm. She then served as a U.S. attorney for the Northern Ohio U.S. District Court.

President Joe Biden nominated her for district judge in September 2021. She received confirmation from the Senate and received her judicial commission in February 2022.

In the News…

U.S. District Judge Bridget Brennan ruled against part of an Ohio election law that plaintiffs said restricted people from helping disabled voters cast absentee ballots. The law, intended to stop ballot-harvesting, made it a fourth-degree felony for someone who isn’t an election official or postal worker to possess or return absentee ballots of disabled voters unless the person was a close relative.

Judge Brennan ruled that the federal Voting Rights Act supersedes the state law that went into effect in April 2023. She ruled that people cannot be criminally prosecuted for dropping off the absentee ballots for someone who is disabled.

“Section 208 unambiguously recognizes that disabled voters have a right to choose their own facilitator,” Brennan wrote. “The challenged Ohio law directly contravenes that mandate.”
